My artistic process often involves secret collaborations with my day job as a photo retoucher; such as stock piling digital blemishes to construct new portraits or using a computer program to create drawings based on my gestural hand movements while editing an image. The base materials for my recent paintings come from the imperfections in skin and color adjustments applied to figures in digital photographs. Sitting in a dark room all day altering minute facial flaws I think about the history of portraiture and what it means to depict an individual at a particular moment in time and space. In a contemporary culture that is enamored with its own dematerialization I focus on the forgotten and discarded photographic elements in relationship to the pixelated body. Titles for works such as "Not very pretty" and "No cookie cutter" are taken from absurd client comments regarding adjustments to produce a ‘better’ image of someone. My works exist in multiple formats fluctuating between digital video to silk sculptures to canvas and adhesive vinyl.
